SOLO CREDITS
SMASHES
originally titled Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Secret Bisexual? An Analysis of the (Love) Letters of Feminist Author Charlotte Perkins Gilman Written to Her Closest Female Friends (1880-1910) And Maybe Some Comments on Anne of Green Gables, Too
"Smashes": same-sex crushes; slang, late 1800's. Growing up queer is a messy business, whether you're a renowned feminist writer in Victorian-era Rhode Island or an overalls-wearing Alanis Morissette superfan living in the 'burbs. This solo history/comedy show examines feminist literary icon Charlotte Perkins Gilman ("The Yellow Wallpaper", "Herland", "Women and Economics") as a queer pioneer through Franny's own queer identity and coming-out story.
The first reading was presented at Too Queer: A Bi Visibility Cabaret, June 2015. A video of that reading is available here. Workshop performances have since been presented at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (Toronto) as part of Toronto Pride programming and at the Monocle Centre for the Arts (Peterborough), to coincide with Peterborough Pride. Recent productions include a highly successful run at the Fundy Fringe Festival (Saint John, NB) and sold out shows at the inaugural Toronto Bi Arts Festival.
